What Pingdom is
Pingdom is the brand everyone remembers, now a SolarWinds product, and it sells two things we do not have at all: Real User Monitoring measured in the browsers of your own visitors, and scripted transaction monitoring that walks a multi-step journey such as a checkout. Synthetic monitoring starts at 14.33 EUR a month for 10 uptime checks and one advanced check, and there is a 30 day trial rather than a free plan. It is the right choice when you have to prove a service level to a client using data from the visitors of that client, or when a broken funnel costs more in an afternoon than the licence does in a year. It is an expensive way to watch thirty small sites, because checks are the unit you buy and each site you add buys more of them.

Where UptimeEZ is better
Real User Monitoring tells you a visitor had a bad time on your page. It does not tell you which stylesheet failed to load, and that is the hole this engine was built in: nine layout signals weighed over the page as delivered, forty-one signatures for the database and application errors that print inside a 200, and a named cause out of twenty-five with the first check to run. Checks are not the unit you buy here either, so a thirtieth client site adds nothing at all to the bill.

Questions we are asked about Pingdom
I have to prove a service level to a client using their own visitors. Can Pingdom do that, and UptimeEZ?
Pingdom, and nothing on our side comes close. Real User Monitoring measures what actual browsers experienced, which is the only evidence that settles an argument about what a client's visitors saw. UptimeEZ measures what our own check saw, from one place, and that cannot be turned into the first claim. If the contract has numbers in it, buy the tool that produces those numbers.
The checkout breaks at step three. Will Pingdom or UptimeEZ notice?
Pingdom will, with scripted transaction monitoring that walks the whole journey. UptimeEZ requests pages and reads what comes back, so a form that fails after two clicks is outside what it can see, and reading the rendered layout does not change that. A funnel that has to be clicked through needs a tool that clicks.
Pingdom sells checks. How many does thirty client sites need?
At least thirty, before you add a keyword check or a heartbeat anywhere, and their entry bundle is ten uptime checks plus one advanced check at 14.33 EUR a month. We carry no figure for the tier that would hold thirty, so take it from their page rather than from an extrapolation of ours. On the UptimeEZ hosted plan the unit is neither the check nor the site: 9.90 EUR a month, monitors not counted.
Neither Pingdom nor UptimeEZ has a free hosted plan. So how do I try either one?
Pingdom gives you a 30 day trial. UptimeEZ has no free hosted tier either, but the engine is MIT: install it on the hosting you already pay for and it costs nothing for as long as you want it, and there is an hourly demo if you only want to watch it read one page. Two ways of trying before buying, and neither of them is a free plan.
We inherited a Pingdom account. What do we lose by moving off it?
Real User Monitoring and the scripted journeys, both real capabilities UptimeEZ does not have. Page speed you keep, and ours names the files that block the render. One thing to do before you cancel: their page does not announce what leaving with your history involves, so ask for the export while the account is still open, because that request is a great deal harder once it is closed.
Out of these five questions, Pingdom is the answer to 2 of them rather than UptimeEZ. A comparison that wins every question is not one you should believe, and you have already used one of these tools.
