What UptimeRobot is

UptimeRobot is the uptime checker most people meet first, and the free tier is why: 50 monitors at a five minute interval, no card asked. It answers one question very well, whether the server replied, and it answers it from four regions with a longer track record than anyone else on this page. It is the right choice if you watch a handful of sites, a status code is the answer you need, and you want it for nothing. It stops being the right choice the day a client calls you about a page that returned 200 and still looked broken, because nothing on its pricing page says it reads the rendered page.

Where UptimeEZ is better

The gap opens on the morning a page answers 200 and still looks wrong. Their pricing page settles whether the server replied; this engine rebuilds the page the way a visitor receives it, weighs nine layout signals over it, and reads forty-one database and application error signatures printed inside a perfectly valid response. It then names one of twenty-six causes and the first thing to check. And nothing here is counted: thirty client sites at ninety checks cost the same 9.90 EUR a month as one site.

Where UptimeRobot is better

Four monitoring regions (North America, Europe, Asia, Australia), a far longer track record, and a free tier that is genuinely hard to beat if a five minute interval and a status code are all you need. If you must know that your site is unreachable from Sydney specifically, they do that and we do not.

Questions we are asked about UptimeRobot

We are at thirty client sites on UptimeRobot's free plan. What runs out first?

The monitor count. Fifty free monitors cover thirty sites at one check each, but add a keyword check and a backup heartbeat per site and the same estate is ninety monitors, with the heartbeats on a paid plan in any case. UptimeRobot sells its paid plans by monitor too, from 9 EUR a month for 10. The UptimeEZ hosted plan is 9.90 EUR a month and counts neither monitors nor sites.

A client is certain their site is unreachable from Asia. Can UptimeRobot or UptimeEZ settle that?

UptimeRobot, and it is not close. It checks from four regions, North America, Europe, Asia and Australia, so a failure that shows up in one of them is visible in its own results. UptimeEZ checks from one place, our server in France, so it cannot tell a regional failure apart from a general one. If reachability by region is the argument you have to settle with a client, that row is theirs.

UptimeRobot's free plan checks every five minutes. How much can happen in five minutes?

A whole incident, at both ends of it: you learn of a failure up to five minutes late, and that it is over up to five minutes late, which turns a short outage into a phone call from the client. The five minute interval is the free plan's, and we carry no figure for their paid plans. The UptimeEZ hosted plan checks every 30 seconds. For a brochure site five minutes is plenty.

Does it matter that UptimeRobot is closed source and UptimeEZ is not?

It matters for one thing in particular: what the tool means by up. A closed checker hands you a verdict and you take it, while the MIT engine lets you read the check that produced the verdict and change it. The second consequence is practical, not philosophical: an engine you already run does not change the day a plan or a price changes. On most days of most months it makes no difference at all.

Do we have to leave UptimeRobot to try UptimeEZ?

No, and for the first month you should not. Keep the free 50 monitors where they are, point UptimeEZ at the same sites, and compare what each one said about the same morning. The engine is MIT and installs on the shared hosting you already pay for, so the second opinion costs nothing either. Two tools disagreeing about one site is the most useful thing you will read all month.

Out of these five questions, UptimeRobot is the answer to 1 of them rather than UptimeEZ. A comparison that wins every question is not one you should believe, and you have already used one of these tools.
